Tattoo Photo of the Year Winners
Posted 24th February 2006

Consistently impressed is how the judges described the submissions for the 16th annual Edinburgh Tattoo Photographic Competition, which last year attracted more entries than ever.

Over 400 entries from all points of the compass were in fact studied by the 3-strong judging panel.

Panel member and former Scotsman Picture Editor, Stewart Boyd, said: "With the variety and unfailing high standard of entry, selecting a winner was a particularly close run thing."

1st: Norwegian Circle by Mike Crutch

2nd: Swirling Skirts by Lesley McHardy

3rd: Dancing Ring by Dr David Hume

But amateur photographer, Mike Crutch of Fareham in Hampshire, demonstrated an ability to capture that crucial moment on film with his digital 'Norwegian Circle' shot for which he has been awarded first place and £500.

Compositionally, the photograph hauls the viewer into the action as your eyes follow the clock-work precision movements of the Drill Team of The Guard of His Majesty The King of Norway against a tartan effect shadow.

Second place and £250 went to Lesley McHardy from the Highland Perthshire town of Blairgowrie for her striking 'Swirling Skirts' image which illustrates the dynamism of The Russian Cossack State Dance Company.

The diagonal motion created by the three female dancers impresses upon the spectator the nimble-footed power of their movements.

Dr David Hume from St Michael's on Wyre in Lancashire took third place and collects £150 for his dramatic 'Dancers' Ring' photograph of the Tattoo's Highland Spring Dancers in action resplendent in traditional Scottish apparel.

Quick enough to take advantage of being in the right place at the right time has helped Dr Hume fashion the arty nature of his special composition.
