Royal
Air Force to mark 55th Edinburgh Tattoo
Posted
25th November 2003
The
largest single gathering of military musicians in the United Kingdom
are set to perform at next year's showpiece armed services event
staged against the matchless backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.
Using
the latest sound and lighting techniques, the event, which will
present the Royal Air Force and feature its Massed Bands and renowned
silent drill display team, The Queen's Colour Squadron, will run
in the Scottish Capital from 6 to 28 August with one of the biggest
casts ever assembled for the Tattoo.
Over
600 musicians will feature amongst the 1,000-strong line-up for
the 2004 show, which also marks a decade of the event being helmed
by Tattoo Chief Executive & Producer, Brigadier Melville Jameson.
Said
the Brigadier: "Next year's production will include some
superb national and international performers who will fill the
esplanade with extraordinary colour and unrivalled variety from
around the world as well as providing a showcase for the talents
of the armed services."
It
will embrace the skills of an Indian cultural group from Mizoram
in North East India; the South African Navy Band from Cape Town,
who play musical instruments which include water buffalo horns;
and a Massed Highland Dancing Display featuring 50 young dancers
from across Australia who will join the Tattoo's excellent Highland
Dancers.
While
from under the starry sky of some remote and exotic frontier will
come India's 61st Cavalry - the only non-mechanised regular cavalry
in the world, and they are set to assemble each evening with some
of the Indian Army's foremost pipers & drummers and military
musicians.
And
the grand finale will, as always, feature some of the best bands
from home and overseas. The RAF's Massed Bands ahead of the Pipes
& Drums re-joining proceedings with music for which the Tattoo
is acclaimed will perform time-honoured musical favourites such
as Dam Busters and Aces High.
Yet
the centrepiece and very heart of next year's Tattoo is once again
expected to be the spine-tingling sights and sounds of the world-famous
Massed Pipes & Drums as they emerge across the drawbridge
of Scotland's top visitor attraction, Edinburgh Castle.
"It
is with immense pride," remarked Brigadier Jameson, "that
each year the Tattoo is able to present the finest Massed Pipes
& Drums that anyone will witness anywhere in the world."
The
Edinburgh Tattoo is grateful to main sponsor, The Royal Bank of
Scotland, for its generous support in mounting the 2004 event.
Sir George Mathewson, Chairman of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group
said, "The Tattoo is renowned as one of the most spectacular
events in Europe's calendar. The acts lined up for 2004 promise
to be as outstanding as in previous years, and we are once again
delighted to be supporting it".
