The 2007 Tattoo Photographic Competition
The use of flash equipment during the show is forbidden and it is also ineffective in a large arena such as the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle.
Patrons are also not allowed to move around the stands during the show or use tripods.
However, using an appropriate camera and film will allow satisfactory results from the stands and these guidelines may be helpful.
- The floodlighting used during a Tattoo performance can produce satisfactory photographic results when using a suitable camera with appropriate shutter and lens aperture adjustments.
- Any auto-flash settings should be switched off.
- An ISO speed setting of 400 or 800 ISO is recommended on digital or film cameras with the colour balance set for artificial lighting if possible.
The alternative to a shot of the show is to capture some other aspect of the Tattoo such as performers awaiting the start. For such a photograph regular cameras are perfectly adequate and it could be one of these shots that wins the competition.
The best of luck
